This study investigates whether tissue samples taken from the colon during routine colonoscopy can detect signs of Parkinson's disease. The purpose is to find the protein alpha-synuclein in colon tissue samples from people with Parkinson's disease. Participants will be in the study for the duration of their scheduled colonoscopy, which involves one screening visit and sample collection during the procedure.
During the study, participants will complete questionnaires about their symptoms, take a smell test, and collect a stool sample at home. During the colonoscopy, doctors will take four additional small tissue samples. This procedure adds about two minutes to the normal colonoscopy. The samples will be tested for the presence of the alpha-synuclein protein.
- Who can participate: Adults aged 40 to 99 with Parkinson's disease and scheduled for a routine colonoscopy can join. They should not have a history of colon cancer or recent stomach issues.
- Study details: Participants will answer questions, take a smell test, and collect a stool sample at home. During the colonoscopy, doctors will take extra tissue samples to test for a protein linked to Parkinson's.
