Phase N/A

This study aims to better understand the genetic causes of Parkinson's Disease (PD). PD is a brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with walking, balance, and coordination. Researchers will collect samples from people with PD and some with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), a sleep condition that can be linked to PD. They'll study the whole genome, meaning all of a person's DNA, to find rare changes in genes that might cause these diseases. They will also use iPSC technology. This means they will take a type of blood cell and turn it into stem cells, which can become any cell in the body, to study the disease further.

  • The study will involve about 200 patients and will include blood sampling.
  • Participation requires outpatient visits and signing an informed consent.
  • The research could help create genetic tests for predicting PD.

People eligible to take part are those with certain PD symptoms or with RBD. Some conditions, like other brain diseases or certain drug uses, could exclude someone from joining. The study takes place in Italy and involves multiple hospitals working together.

FAQs

Learn more about clinical trials

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a study designed to test specific interventions or treatments' effectiveness and safety, paving the way for new, innovative healthcare solutions.

Why should I take part in a clinical trial?

Participating in a clinical trial provides early access to potentially effective treatments and directly contributes to the healthcare advancements that benefit us all.

How long does a clinical trial take place?

The duration of clinical trials varies. Some trials last weeks, some years, depending on the phase and intention of the trial.

Do I get compensated for taking part in clinical trials?

Compensation varies per trial. Some offer payment or reimbursement for time and travel, while others may not.

How safe are clinical trials?

Clinical trials follow strict ethical guidelines and protocols to safeguard participants' health. They are closely monitored and safety reviewed regularly.
