Improved Recovery by Iron Following Surgery With Blood Loss, the IRIS-trial

Study on Iron Supplementation for Recovery After Surgery with Blood Loss

Recruiting
18 years and older
All
Phase 3

This study investigates post-operative anemia, which can occur after major surgeries like hepatopancreatobiliary and complex aortic surgeries due to blood loss and pre-existing iron deficiency.

The study evaluates the effectiveness of intravenous iron in improving recovery after surgery. It focuses on how iron supplementation might affect recovery, reduce the need for blood transfusions, and improve overall health outcomes.

  • Who can participate: Adults over 18 years of age, weighing more than 50 kg, scheduled for complex aortic, liver, or pancreatic surgery may participate. Participants cannot have had recent iron therapy or severe anemia before surgery.
  • Study details: Participants will receive either an investigational medication or a placebo after surgery. A placebo is an inactive substance that looks like the investigational medicine but does not contain any medicine.
