Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition where red blood cells are shaped like sickles (a curved tool). These sickle-shaped cells can cause painful blockages in blood vessels, known as vaso-occlusive crises (VOC). These crises often require hospitalization, and despite treatment, pain may persist. In this study, researchers are exploring global reflexology as a way to help manage pain in children with sickle cell disease. Reflexology is a technique where pressure is applied to certain points on the hands or feet to help relieve pain.
In 2013, reflexology sessions showed promising results in reducing pain for some patients. This study aims to see if reflexology can be a helpful addition to usual pain treatments for children under 18 with sickle cell disease.
- Study Length: Not specified; involves hospital visits.
- Eligibility: Patients under 18 with sickle cell disease, hospitalized for VOC.
- Risks: Minimal as reflexology is non-invasive.
Participants must have parental consent and be able to agree to the study if old enough.
