Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder where red blood cells change shape and cause pain, called vaso-occlusive crisis (CVO). This study looks at how a gas called MEOPA, used for pain relief, affects Vitamin B12 in children with sickle cell disease. Vitamin B12 is important for nerve health and making DNA.
When children with sickle cell are exposed to MEOPA, it may cause a deficiency (lack) of Vitamin B12. This deficiency can cause problems like low blood pressure or nerve damage. The study involves taking small blood and urine samples during the hospital stay and after leaving, to check vitamin levels and other substances involved in B12 metabolism.
- Participants are children aged 2-18 with sickle cell disease.
- Visits include hospitalization and follow-ups 7 days and one month later.
- Patients will have pain management and neurological checks during the study.
This study helps understand how long or how much exposure to MEOPA affects Vitamin B12, aiming to prevent health issues in the future.
