This study is looking at how well adding lidocaine, a numbing medicine, can help reduce the need for opioids (strong painkillers) in people with sickle cell disease during a severe pain crisis. Sickle cell disease is a condition where red blood cells are shaped like a sickle, causing blockages and pain. A vaso-occlusive crisis happens when these cells block blood flow, causing pain and other issues.
Eligibility: Participants need to be 18 or older, have sickle cell disease, and be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for a vaso-occlusive crisis. They should have started treatment with pain medications like morphine or oxycodone within the last 72 hours.
- The study involves receiving lidocaine along with regular pain treatment.
- Participants must be informed about the study and agree to take part.
- Some people cannot join, such as those with other health issues, pregnant women, or those on certain medications.
